Bright Futures: Strengthening Early Childhood Education in Rwanda
Early childhood education lays the foundation for a child’s future. The early years are when children develop curiosity, confidence, and the foundational skills that prepare them for school.
But many nursery schools in rural Rwanda simply don’t have the materials they need to support early learning.
That’s why Azizi Life created Bright Futures.
Bright Futures partners with nursery schools to provide Bright Futures Boxes—complete educational toy kits designed to help young children learn through play, exploration, and hands-on discovery.
To make this possible, we partnered with Toddle Care, a Rwandan educational toy company that designs tools specifically for early childhood classrooms.

Designed for Learning
Toddle Care created the Bright Futures Box, a curriculum-aligned learning system designed specifically for Rwanda’s early childhood classrooms.
Each kit contains more than 600 hands-on learning components and supports all seven pre-primary learning objectives established by the Rwanda Education Board (REB).
Each Bright Futures Box includes:
- Alphabet tiles and phonics materials
- Counting beads and numeracy tools
- Flashcards and visual learning aids
- Sorting and pattern-building activities
- A structured activity guide for teachers
- A comprehensive teacher user manual
Each kit can serve up to 30 children and helps transform traditional classrooms into active learning environments where children can explore, experiment, and discover.

Built in Rwanda
The boxes are manufactured in Kigali using recycled wood offcuts, combining educational impact with environmental sustainability.
Toddle Care recently expanded production capacity through the Ireme Invest Circular Economy Programme, implemented by the Rwanda Green Fund. This investment allowed Toddle Care to acquire advanced manufacturing machinery, increasing production capacity while maintaining high-quality and sustainable standards.
Through this partnership, Bright Futures supports local manufacturing, environmental responsibility, and Rwandan innovation.
Addressing a Critical Gap
Many nursery schools in Rwanda face significant challenges, including:
- Limited curriculum-aligned teaching materials
- Over-reliance on rote learning
- Few durable classroom resources
- Limited tools to support teachers
- Gaps in early literacy and numeracy development
Without hands-on learning tools, teachers often struggle to fully deliver the learning objectives designed to prepare children for primary school.
Bright Futures helps address this gap by equipping classrooms with the resources needed to support play-based, experiential learning during this critical stage of development.
What Teachers Are Seeing
Teachers are already seeing the difference these tools make in their classrooms.
“The classroom kits have helped children learn colors, numbers, and letters quickly. Before we had them, about 15–18 children attended. Now we have 25–30 because parents see their children learning.”
— Mbonigaba Jean Claude, Teacher at ECD Imena
“We use them for games, for learning the alphabet, for math, for art, and for culture. When children start to get bored and you use the kits, they all come back to class.”
— Esperance Mukamfura, Teacher at TUBARERE Nursery School
“The tools help children learn numbers and letters quickly. We have two classes, so we take turns using the nursery classroom kit.”
— Elvis Munyurwa, Teacher at G.S. Bukomero

Why Early Learning Matters
Research consistently shows that investment in early childhood education produces some of the highest long-term educational and economic returns.
When children have access to quality early learning:
- They enter primary school better prepared
- They build stronger literacy and numeracy skills
- They gain confidence as learners
- They are more likely to continue their education
These early experiences shape a child’s path for years to come.
Helping Create Bright Futures
Through Bright Futures, Azizi Life is helping nursery schools across rural Rwanda gain access to the tools they need to support early learning.
Together with partners like Toddle Care, we are working to ensure that more children begin their educational journey with the resources and opportunities they deserve.
A simple set of learning tools can open the door to discovery, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
