Women’s History Month at Azizi Life

Every March, since 1987, we celebrate Women’s History Month and honor the contributions of women in history and society, as well as recognize the accomplishments currently in progress. At Azizi Life, we believe in the power of women, and the influence several women in our artisan community have on both their families and their communities. Every week for the month of March, we will highlight several women in our artisan community and honor all they have done and continue to do!

We all have a roll when it comes to honoring and supporting women! Here are a few ways you can show up for women, not only in March but everyday!

  1. Advocate for women’s rights and gender equality
  2. Mentor a young girl in your community
  3. Support women-led organizations
  4. Write a thank you note to the woman who inspires you
  5. Spread awareness of Women’s History Month
  6. Share your stories and listen to the stories of other women

“My life was not easy as a young girl, I didn’t have access to basic knowledge which would guide me in the future. After completing Azizi Life’s Adult Literacy Program, I am planning to work for myself as an entrepreneur.”

– Valentine

For the past 8 years, Valentine Mukakabera has specialized in weaving with banana leaves. When she was a child, Valentine did not have the opportunity to go to school. Instead, she was kept home to work and help support the family. Now a mother of five, Valentine has decided that this is not the life she wants for her children. With the fair wage income from her weaving, she is working so that all of her kids will be able to complete school. One victory from her weaving is that Valentine has installed electricity in her home! Wonderful things can come from nature + creativity + determination + fair wages.
