Open the Door to Literacy: Florida’s Story and Yours
When Words Become Possibility
September 8 is International Literacy Day, a reminder that words hold power. Around the world, 773 million adults cannot read or write, and two-thirds of them are women. Without literacy, everyday life can feel like a closed door—opportunities locked, independence out of reach, hope harder to see. We first shared about these challenges in our Freedom from Illiteracy blog back in 2017, and today Florida’s story shows how those challenges can be overcome.
At Azizi Life, we’ve seen what happens when that door begins to open. Since 2016, 7,339 adults have learned to read and write through our programs. Each person has a story, and one of the first is Florida’s.
Florida’s Story
Florida was one of our first artisan partners and among the first to graduate from our literacy program. For years, she carried the weight of not being able to read or write. She told us, “All my children finished school. They will never have the tears I had. I am thankful to the Lord and to Azizi Life for supporting me every step.”
Florida’s tears were real. But so is her triumph. She now lives with confidence, knowing she has opened doors for her children that were once closed to her.
Her story is a glimpse of what literacy does—it transforms generations.

More Than Reading and Writing
Each literacy course lasts six months. At the end, students proudly receive a certificate and a Bible—symbols of accomplishment and a new beginning.
Along the way, students also learn 83 topics on wellbeing and Bible study, truths that remind them they are created with value and purpose. Learning to read God’s Word for themselves is one of the greatest gifts they carry away.
Literacy also transforms everyday life. Graduates can read and fill an order for their artisan business, keep track of household expenses, and help their children learn to read. These practical skills bring confidence and ripple into the next generation. We shared more about this in our International Day of Education blog, where we outlined three ways illiteracy affects everyday life.
Since 2016, literacy has spread into 7 rural learning centers and even into a prison education program.

Where You Come In
Our vision for 2026 is big: 2,000 new students trained. To make this possible, we’re praying and working toward raising $40,000.
Here’s what your gift can do:
- $20 funds literacy for one student.
- $700 sponsors an entire class.
One life. One classroom. One future.
